Cross Country Mountain Bikes:
Cross country mountain bikes are fantastic all-around rides. They differ from all-mountain bikes in that these bikes save weight, generally have less travel, but still maintain a "go anywhere, ride anything" attitude. This style of bike climbs like no other. When you really want to put the hurt on your riding buddies, do it on the uphill, and make 'em suffer!

All Mountain Mountain Bikes:
All-mountain mountain bikes are some of the most popular rides on the market. Increased travel over xc mountain bikes means faster downhill descents while maintaining excellent climbing capabilities. All-mountain means effecient climbing, increased travel, bigger hits, and control.

Freeride Mountain Bikes:
When you spend as much time in the air as you do on the trail consider a freeride style mountain bike. Built to take the big hits and return for more, freeride is all about speed. Scarey speed on the roughest terrain that Colorado has to offer.

Hardtail Mountain Bikes:
Back in the day, hardtails were the only mountain bikes available and they weren't cheap either! Now, hardtails (front suspenstion only) repesent a killer value. Hardtails can be either a great first bike or a high speed racing machine. Nothing climbs a trail like a hardtail...

Hot Springs Mad Creek Trail Profile
Strawberry Park Hot Springs/Mad Creek

This is a great ride that you easily get to from town. From Ski Haus ride Highway 40 (Lincoln) to 3rd. Right on 3rd to Fish Creek Falls Road. Right on Fish Creek up to Amethyst. Left on Amethyst to Strawberry Park Road. Right on Strawberry Park and spin the flats and anticipate a good climb up to the Hot Springs.

From the Hot Springs catch the singletrack and watch the trail... not the creek. Some off camber sections along this trail will keep things exciting.

Ride singletrack to County Road 129 and spin the pavement home. Or to extend your ride, catch the Red Dirt Trail and ride up.

Emerald Mountain - Howelsen Hill

World class mountain biking right in our front yard. What can be better? How about a world class view of the Mount Werner, Steamboat Springs, and Yampa Valley from the Quarry? This is your reward for sticking with the climb to the top!

Emerald Mountain and the Howelsen Hill area offer too many trails to list here. The occurring theme is steep ups and fast descents. Granny-gear your climbs if you like... Mountain bikes are geared to spin up any ascent reducing your climb to payments of time.

Once you're at the top let gravity bring you home. Explore tons of singletracks, dirt roads, and two-tracks coming down.

One of the easiest ways to access Emerald Mountain is from the Fairview neighborhood just north of Howelsen Hill. From the top of Fairview "Mile Run" is an easy way to climb to the top. Tons of named (Lane of Pain, Loops 1-6, Lupine Loop, and more) and not named singletrack will show themselves as you climb and descend this majical area...

Maps: Trails Illustrated #118, Sky Terrain's Steamboat Springs/Mount Zirkel, or click here to check out the Howelsen Hill Summer Map.

.Mount Werner/Steamboat Ski Area

There are quite a few trails on Mount Werner to choose from. You can ride the gondola up with your bike or you can ride up from the base. There is a fee for the priviledge of besting gravity (the gondola) and helmets are required if you plan on riding the mountain.

Zig Zag, Duster Sunshine Loop, Valley View, Pete's Wicked Trail, Mountain View, Creekside, are but a few of the trails on the hill.
If you do ride up, more power to you. The elevation gain is 3500 feet up. And the good news is its 3500 feet down, too.

The ski area makes for a great destination from Rabbit Ears/Dumont. It's a great bike/hike trail across the pass. Or, catch the Mountain View trail from the top of the ski area and ride over to Buffalo Pass.

Maps: Trails Illustrated #118 or Sky Terrain's Steamboat Springs/Mount Zirkel Map, or the ski area's summer map.

Rabbit Ears Pass to Buffalo Pass

This is a classic ride. The easiest way to get to the trailhead above Dumont Lake is to drive up Rabbit Ears Pass and collect your vehicle after your ride by shuttle. Dedicated souls will ride their bikes up the pass and make their way to Buffalo Pass for a massive ride.

This trail (Forest Trail #1101) gives you lots of options. You can ride to Fishhook Lake, Lost Lake, or Lake Elmo and return to your starting point. Or connect with the Mountain View Trail just past Long Lake and ride down the trails on the Steamboat Ski Area. Or, continue to Buffalo Pass and ride the road back down to town. The last option is to ride down Fish Creek Falls trial but this trail sees lots of hikers and the other options are recommended.

By starting on top of the pass you eliminate tons of climbing. Forest Service Trail #1101 is a pleasure to ride. Moderate difficulty and rolling terrain. Be prepared for anything and everything from flat tires to monster thunderstorms... you're a long ways from home on this trail!

Coulton Creek Trail

Coulton Crrek Trail is up in North Routt County. To get to the trailhead leave from Ski Haus and drive west on Highway 40 (Lincoln Avenue) to the intersection of 40 and Country Road 129. Just after you pass the little berg of Clark, turn right on Seedhouse road. Watch for Forest Service Trail #1188 and park there.

Coulton Creek is a pretty short ride but if you connect it with the Pearl Lake Trail, Scott's Run, and even Diamond Park you can ride all day and then some...

Coulton Creek features a few steep climbs, a few steep descents, meadows, forests, and terrific rolling terrain, too.

This is great biking, especially when you add the above combinations of trails. You're a bit further away from shelter, people, and services here so be prepared with plenty of water, food, adequate clothing, and repair kits (for your bike and yourself!).

Spring Creek to Buffalo Pass

Here's an easy ride that you can access from town.

Lots of people ride this trail by climbing Buffalo Pass and descending Spring Creek. Others climb Spring Creek and return down Buffalo Pass or ride out and back on Spring Creek. No matter how you choose to ride this trail watch out for hikers and runners. This trail is easy to get to from town so it sees lots of use. Mountain bikers always yield to hikers, runners or horseback riders.

From Ski Haus ride Highway 40 to town, turn right on 3rd, right on Fish Creek Falls Road, Left on Amethyst, right onto Spring Creek Trail. If you're riding up Buffalo Pass continue along Amethyst to Strawberry Park Road, turn right to Buffalo Pass (right turn) and start your climb!

Where to Ride:
From century rides to fun lunchtime loops, the road rding around Steamboat Springs is special. Here are a few of our favorites:

Rabbit Ears Pass Road Ride
Twentymile Road
Yelowjacket Pass Road Ride
County Road 129 Road Ride

Rabbit Ears Pass:
Approximate distance: 12 miles to the top at the West summit. Great shoulder all the way up and across the pass. Wonderful riding when you're ready for a climb.

From Ski Haus, turn left from Pine Grove Road onto Highway 40's great shoulder and you're off! Your first challenge will be to get by the Mount Werner Road exit. Watch for fast cars and trucks exceeding the speed limit while trying to exit and not giving you the time of day...

Once past the Mount Werner Road exit you are pretty much ready to spin to the base of Rabbit Ears. Pass the intersection of Colorado Highway 131 (131 hooks you up to Catamount Lake, Yellow Jacket Pass, River Road, Stagecoach State Park, and Oak Creek Canyon).

Tip for the descent: Watch for nasty cross-winds (especially in the afternoon) as you dive into and come out of the man made road cuts.

Twenty Mile Road: 55+ miles.
From Ski Haus turn left from Pine Grove Road and blast the short shot to the Mount Werner Road Exit on Highway 40. Turn right ancross the bridge. Left onto River Road to town. This is the back way into town. It starts the ride easier and eliminates main street traffic.

At 5th Street, turn right, cross the bridge, left on Yampa and head for Twenty Mile Road (RCR 33). At the Community Center/Library hit the bike path to short cut it to Twenty Mile. Left on Twenty Mile Road and find your pace. You'll be in the saddle for awhile now...

This ride also has sections of dirt road thrown in for good measure. The dirt sections are not too long and are easy to ride.

Follow Routt County Road 33 (Twenty Mile Road) past Cow Creek (RCR 45, this is a great cyclocross loop), past RCR 33B (a shortcut to Milner), to the intersection of 33 and 29. Take the right and hang with 33 until you intersect with County Road 27. Turn right on 27 through Grassy Gap and Windy Point to Highway 40. East on 40 will spin you back to Steamboat Springs and a well deserved refreshment at the Zoom Coffee Shop or Ski Haus Liquor.

Yellowjacket Pass: 40 miles round trip.
This ride offers just about everything a road rider could want. Lots of varied terrain, scenery, good road, and even a shoulder for a couple miles...

Leaving from Ski Haus ride Highway 40 to Colorado 131. After 9 miles or so turn left on County Road 14. There is a sign for Yellow Jacket Pass and Stagecoach State Park.

Ride County Road 14 up and over Yellow Jacket Pass which is a small gap between Thorpe Mtn and Blacktail Mtn. Turn right on 131 to Oak Creek, down Oak Creek Canyon (this section in the fall, Oak Creek Canyon, is a miracle in full color) and ride back to Ski Haus and Steamboat Springs.

Very narrow to non-existent shoulders. In the spring, sections of 14 can be a bit beat up from winter frost heaves and broken pavement. Expect chip-seal on the section of road past Stagecoach Reservoir to the intersection of 131. The rest of the loop is in very good condition.

A critical 4 mile section of 131 is under construction. Be advised! The turn onto CR14 may be hazardous to your health! Watch for construction until further notice!

County Road 129:
This may be the most poplar ride in our area. The reward for your efforts is a stop at the Clark Store for some refreshing ice cream. One scoop or two? It all depends on how fast you want to ride back to Steamboat.

Distance: 21 miles one way to Clark from Ski Haus.

Leaving from Ski Haus, avoid riding through downtown Steamboat traffic by hitting River Road. This section of River Road is smooth pavement and a cool way to dodge lots of cars on the main drag through town.

Once you ride through town, turn right on County Road 129. Expect narrow to nonexistent shoulders in places. Rolling through the Elk River Valley, you'll ride a mix of downhills and climbs although technically the ride is all uphill going and all downhill coming back. Technically...

From Clark, continue to Steamboat Lake, Columbine, and all points north. Great scenery. Great riding. Don't forget to save your energy for the ride back...

Ski Haus to Lake Catmount:
Distance one way - 10 miles.

This is a very scenic ride with Baldy Mountain rising high above the Lake Catamount. When the season's change this is a spectacular ride with the new green or fall colors of the aspens reflecting off the lake...

From Ski Haus ride east on 40 to 131. Ride 131 to County Road 18. Left on 18 and hit the chip seal surface. This road rides very nice and is very quiet with little traffic.

Once you see Lake Catamount continue on 18 around the lake to County Road 18C. Turn left on 18C and ride to the bridge that crosses the Yampa.

On the ride back to Ski Haus hit County Road 20 (a small dirt road that connects 131 to 40) and ride Highway 40's nice shoulder. The race is on to the city limit sign. Looser buys lunch!

Thinking about joining the brotherhood of commuters? You've seen them riding their bikes to work, the market, to school, everywhere.

For a long time, from behind your windshield, you have seen these bike riders starting their day with some fresh air, exercise, and dedication. You also noticed that these same commuters are the ones who show up to work with the best attitudes. Hummm. Interesting.

What do you need to get started on your daily commute? First, don't try to make it daily. Thinking of riding to work everyday can sound too tough. Start with a Tuesday and then ride again on Thursday. By the time next week rolls around you will be missing the morning ride and will want to ride Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The following week you might even want to ride all five days.

Here are a few tips to help you get started:

- Pick a route. The same route that you drive to work may not be the best way to ride your bike. Find the bike paths (both paved and the hidden dirt trail gems).

- Use a Messenger Bag for your change of clothes, lunch, bike lock, etc. These bags are super comfortable to ride with.

- If your work doesn't offer a shower, bird bath it in the restroom. A small hand towel, deodorant, maybe some type of handiwipe is all you need.

- Fenders on your commuter rig might be nice but not required. For wet weather, use the same clothing you would wear day hiking in the rain. It all crosses over.

- You will find that your morning schedule stays about the same. Riding to work usually takes about the same amount of time as warming up the car, stopping at traffic lights, or trying to make a left turn downtown, etc.

- Always ride with your helmet strapped to your head.

The hardest thing about commuting on your bike is getting started. Once you get the action going it just gets easier and easier. Start your riding as soon as you can in the spring. Don't let a little wind, cold, and rain get in your way.

Good commuting habits are easy to keep, it's just a matter of developing them.
