| Count on 3 or more hours for this ride. Yes, some will ride faster and others will come back with tales of the Odyssey....Be prepared with the proper clothing (for sudden rain/snow storms) and take plenty of water and food to keep the bonk at bay. From Ski Haus turn left from Pine Grove Road and blast the short shot to the Mount Werner Road Exit on Highway 40. Turn right ancross the bridge. Left onto River Road to town. This is the back way into town. It starts the ride easier and eliminates main street traffic. At 5th Street, turn right, cross the bridge, left on Yampa and head for Twenty Mile Road (RCR 33). At the Community Center/Library hit the bike path to short cut it to Twenty Mile. Left on Twenty Mile Road and find your pace. You'll be in the saddle for awhile now... This ride is very typical of Routt County. Lots of rolling terrain, crosswinds, headwinds, and headwinds. Even as you change directions expecting the wind to favor your back the wind will change and become a headwind. Just be prepared... This ride also has sections of dirt road thrown in for good measure. The dirt sections are not too long and are easy to ride. Follow Routt County Road 33 (Twenty Mile Road) past Cow Creek (RCR 45, this is a great cyclocross loop), past RCR 33B (a shortcut to Milner), to the intersection of 33 and 29. Take the right and hang with 33 until you intersect with County Road 27. Turn right on 27 through Grassy Gap and Windy Point to Highway 40. East on 40 will spin you back to Steamboat Springs and a well deserved refreshment at the Zoom Coffee Shop or Ski Haus Liquor. |
