Current Conditions update.
Late May and early June offered up some exciting paddling on the Yampa River. A long, wet spring ended with warm temps and lots of sun. When the sun came out, the faucets turned on and the rivers and creeks spiked quickly. Just a few weeks ago, I had a downstream session on the Yampa at 3300 CFS. High water offered up shortcuts across grassy areas and tons of features in the river to negotiate.
As the water started to drop, I've been spending more time surfing standing waves through town. Currently, the river is flowing at 600 CFS. Some of the smaller waves are disappearing and the larger ones are less intimidating (C and D holes). Today's lunch break was an excellent opportunity to get out and paddle upstream from Fetcher Pond to Rotary Park. The mellow flow and temps in the 80s made for a beautiful paddle. Get out there soon while the conditions are great.
