Try this Ride: A favorite local ride is spinning up to the town of Clark and back. One of the huge motivating factors to ride the 20 or so miles up there is ice cream from the Clark General Store. One scoop or two? It all depends on how fast you expect to ride home.
From Steamboat Springs ride west to the intersection of Highway 40 and RCR 129. Turn right and you're on your way. Expect narrow to nonexistent shoulders in places.
This is classic northwest Colorado terrain and a classic ride. Rolling through the Elk River Valley, you'll ride a mix of downhills and climbs although technically the ride is all uphill going and all downhill coming back. Technically...
Early in the ride you'll parallel the Elk River and cross Mad Creek. During spring runoff the sound of cascading water is a soothing surprise as you warm up to the ride. Lots of pasture land, hay fields, cows and horses to keep you company as well as great views of the Sleeping Giant, Sand Mountain, Hahns Peak and Meaden Peak.
What to take:

Be prepared to fix a flat with glueless patches, tire irons, and pump. If you don't want to take the time to patch your tube, carry an extra.

Take lots of water!

Wear a jersey with back pockets so you can stash an energy gel or two.

In the spring or fall, those same back pockets are ideal for leg warmers, knee warmers, and arm warmers.

Be prepared for fast changes in the weather. Always take a shell unless you're confident that sucker hole will hold.

Eye protection is a must to keep road grit and debris out of your eyes. Ski Haus sells sunglasses from Oakley, Smith, Specialized, and Maui Jim.

Always wear a designed bike helmet on your head while riding.
Riding the roads means speed.
The Gear:
1. Giro Eclipse Road Helmet - Air cooled with 24 high performance vents. 2-way adjustable Roc Loc for a custom fit. Everything you want and nothing less.
2. Smith Toasters (slider series) - Eye protection from dust and debris. Three color choices of lenses will keep contrast high in low or harsh light.
3. Oakley Jersey - Pick your style, pick your colors, just make sure your jersey is lightweight and moisture wicking to keep you comfortable.
4. CatEye Bicycle Computer - The information you get from a bike computer is motivating. Ride faster, further. And rack up those miles so at the end of the summer you can say that was a great season!
5. Pearl Izumi W's Gel Lite Gloves - Pads on the gloves create comfort, reduce pressure points and absorb shocks. A women's cut and design enhance fit.
6. Pearl Izumi Microsensor Bike Shorts - Pearl has been making cycling shorts for a very long time. Experience counts. These are very high tech with ergonomic panel design, 3D chamois, flatlocked stitching, and spandex leg grippers to hold the short in position.
7. Pedros Patch Kit - Your thumb can work to get you a ride back to town but a self contained patch kit with levers and a fresh tube will let you complete your ride on your own.
8. Silca Bike Pump (attached to water bottle holder) - Fred and Wilma, peanut butter and jelly, spare tube and pump. Great combos work together, not separately. One wonÕt work without the other...
9. Sugoi Socks - Cycling socks help keep your feet cool. The fun graphics stitched into the uppers are cool, too.
10. Shimano Road Shoes - Designed road shoes are incredibly strong through the soles. All of your effort is transferred directly to the pedals and crank arms helping you to be more efficient. Once you make the switch it doesnÕt take long to be comfortable getting in and out of the pedals as you need.
Ride fast. Drive slow.
