Ski Haus to River Road to 131 to 40 to Ski Haus
This loop is approximately 23 mies round trip and includes some dirt road sections.
Leaving from Ski Haus take Highway 40 to Mount Werner Road. Ride the exit ramp down and turn right, cross the Yampa, turn left on River Road (County Road 35).
River Road is nice and mellow and easy rolling terrain. At the intersection of 35 and 41 you have a choice. Ride right up 41 and climb the hill to the end of the pavement and the intersection of Cow Creek (County Road 45). If you are your cross bike, continuing on Cow Creek is a great loop back to town.
Back at the intersection of 35 and 41 continue straight on 35 and start to climb the relatively short dirt road section that will take you to Colorado Highway 131.
Once you hit 131 turn left and spin it back towards town. You'll be on a section of road with no shoulder and a speed limit of 65. Pick up the pace line and try to get back to the section of road that offers a shoulder before too many cars and trucks pass you...
Either continue on 131 back to 40 and Ski Haus or you can throw in another small dirt road. Turn right on CR 22 from 131 to sneak over to 40 at the base of Rabbit Ears Pass. Good shoulder here and its on this road back to town that I have hit some of my best tailwinds. Mach it out to Steamboat Springs city limit sign and Ski Haus.
