The Rider: Vince Gigliotti The Riding Style: Road rider, cyclocross rider and cross country mountain bike rider. The Rig: Cannondale XS 800 Try this Ride for ÔCross: Let the ÒroadieÓ come out as you spin Highway 40 to 131. Head south on 131 to CR 18 and the Catamount turnoff. Up to now the ride has been smooth with easy spinning. Turn left on CR 18 and turn on your headshock to soften the rumble as you hit the chip and seal. Climb to the first view of Lake Catamount with Mt. Baldy reflected off the surface. IÕm always overcome by the view. It never fails. Keep an eye out as you circle the lake. It is not uncommon to see cranes grouped along the shoreline. Up valley, ranch land dominates, then before you know it youÕre riding next to the Yampa River and the forest canopy squeezes over you. Little rollers and compressions in the dirt keep you alert as you spin upstream. Ducks fly close, surprised, as you ride by... Riding past the turnoff to Sarvis Creek Wilderness Area takes you past pastureland, wetlands, and steep gullies dropping down from Blacktail Mountain. The river is never too far off. This peaceful and quiet section is why I come back to this ride again and again. Up a double climb and Stagecoach Reservoir makes its appearance. Continue along the north edge and then itÕs a right turn onto RCR 14. Pavement reappears and then over Yellow Jacket Pass to the best downhill of the day. The road snakes you back to CO 131 and Steamboat Springs. Turn the shock off and get that road spin going again. Now thatÕs a ride! |

| The Gear: 1. Giro Helmet - Nothing fits my head better than a Giro. 2. Oakley Shields - Eye protection from stones and bugs. A shield works best for riding because there is no frame around the lens to block vision. 3. Craft Mingo Jacket - The best shell IÕve ridden in. Protects my core from cool to cold air, it breathes, keeping me comfortable and preventing me from over heating. The back pockets are unique to a shell and provide an easy place to store gear. 4. Sugoi Jersey - Keeps me comfortable and the Sugoi graphics are always a kick. 5. Specialized Gloves - By wearing gloves you eliminate pressure points, numbness, and offer great abrasion protection for your hands if you should crash. 6. Specialized Repair Kit - Patch kit, tube, tire levers, and pump. Fixing flats on a ride is not a big deal and it beats walking your bike home. 7. Cateye Computer - Keeps a record of individual stats that we all talk about. How far did I ride today? How fast? Let me tell you... 8. Pearl Izumi Microsensor Shorts - If youÕre comfortable you can ride all day long. 9. Smartwool Socks - Comfort. Comfort. Comfort. What does it take to ride hour after hour? Comfort. 10. Specialized Comp Shoes - IÕve had these shoes for lots of miles. What can you say? ItÕs about quality and fit. |
