Specialized Elite Computer August 30, 2010
Specialized SpeedZone Analog Elite Altitude Computer
I've owned a few computers over the years. Some have been good and some have been not so good. I recently purchased the Elite Altitude from Specialized and by far this is my favorite. Having your current speed up front all the time is nice. With my old computer I had to scroll through several windows to see all the information I was after. With the Specialized computer I hit the mode button and clock, temperature, barometric-based altimeter, current/max/avg speed, odo/trip meter, auto-stop/lap/interval timer, and speed comparator are easy to find without my current speed disappearing. I like it. On a recent ride up Rabbit Ears Pass the temperature read-out hit 93. The next time I rode the pass it was a cool 83. I also reduced the amount of time it took me to climb the pass and hit a new max speed on the descent. All fun information to have at your fingertips. Looking for a new computer for your bike. I'll give this one two thumbs up!

Camelbak Podium Water Bottle August 23, 2010
Camelbak Podium Water Bottles
If you don't like hydration packs, are a road rider, or simply prefer bottles you should check out the Camelbak Podium water bottles. Tons of people will say a bottle is bottle is a bottle and just grab what is handy in the garage... Well, stop. This bottle is different and it's good. The Jet Valve is maybe the coolest feature. It is either on or off to get water and even when it's off it won't drip all over you or your bike frame. If you like sports drinks in your bottle this is a huge deal. Drip some of that stuff on your frame and it's like scraping paint to clean your bike. The Jet Valve is an easy twist to open (not a push/pull). Once it is open squeeze the bottle for a drink. The self sealing valve eliminated drips. The flow rate is perfect and you will never get that plastic taste...especially on warm days. Ready for a change? A simple little $9 upgrade will have you feeling good and hydrated.
lunchtime rides August 16, 2010
Lunch Rides
You find your times to ride when you find them. Lunchtime is a great time to take advantage of going for a ride. It's pretty easy to pedal out 20+ miles in an hour or so and feel all the better for it. A couple days back might have been my best lunchtime road ride of the summer. Two solid climbs, some good mileage, 19.5 mph average speed, and little to no wind. Super fun. Today was a bit different. The infamous Routt County Headwind was up and beating me down. I mashed the pedals and my cadence was slow. Dark clouds were pushing over Emerald Mountain making the run back to work even slower. Thank goodness there is a tomorrow 'cause I'll be out there to redeem myself... even if it is in my own head and even if it only is a lunch ride. - MS
Bell Volt Helmet August 9, 2010
Bell Volt Helmet
Riding with a helmet is a no brainer. Anything you can do to protect the noggin' from a serious hit is a good thing. If you have a Bell head (as opposed to a Giro or a Specialixed head) the Volt is a spectacular helmet. Combine massive ventilation, minimum weight, and plenty of comfort and you have a winner. Eleven frontal vents pull in massive amounts of air which flow to the helmet's internal channels. Rearward exhaust ports and the moisture-wicking padding work in tandem to help keep me cool. The Volt is made even more comfortable by Bell's fit system that allows you to both dial in the exact fit, as well as adjust the mechanism's horizontal position on the back of the head. Equally at home on- or off-road, the Volt features Bell's a removable visor and is equally at home in Tour de France as it is in the local Tuesday night Worlds or casual ride around the block. The only thing you need to do is put this lid on before every ride... Sounds like a good idea. Lets go!
Specialized S Works MTB Shoe July 26, 2010
Specialized S-Works Moutain Bike Shoes
If the shoe fits... Isn't that what they say? In the case of Specialized's S-Works MTB and Road shoes they are fantastic. The power transfer from rider to pedal is excellent and the fit is equally as good. The BOA steel cable wraps your foot like a glove without any numbing pressure. These shoes are super lightweight and stiff (both high end features). Plus, the Specialized Body Geometry fit places your foot in a more natural pedaling position helping you power through with less fatigue. Sure, the S-Works shoes are pricey but they offer long term value and performance. When you are ready to upgrade your bike shoes (mtb or road) these shoes are worthy.
Tour de Steamboat July 19, 2010
2010 Tour de Steamboat
Ski Haus is a proud sponsor of the Tour de Steamboat. This year's ride went off without a hitch. Thanks to all the organizers, sponsors, and volunteers for all their efforts.

I rode the 110 mile ride and it was a blast. Rabbit Ears Pass is a pretty easy climb since all the riders are fresh. Gore Pass can be a challenge since it comes later in the day and the heat can be up. Typically there is no shade to be found climbing Gore. The only way to climb it is grind it out and refresh yourself at the top. It's mostly all downhill to Toponas from there. This year I was lucky enough to be a 12 to 15 person pace line and we cranked to Phippsburg rolling around 30mph (thank you tailwind). From Stagecoach you need to develope a mind set of keep those crank arms moving and keep the wheels spinning...

The end of ride Bar-b-que is always very good and satisfying after a long day in the saddle. If you havent ridden a Century, Ski Haus, recommends you give the Tour de Steamboat a try. You won't find a better organized and well run event. All proceeds benefit the Sunshine Kids.

Corwin Gugel Ski Haus Employee, Corwin Gugel:
Specialized BG Fit Certified
Corwin recently got back from California where he attended the Specialized Body Geometry Fit Method presented by the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine and Dr. Andrew L. Pruitt. This is an intensive 60 hour program where he learned techniques to fit road bike riders to their bikes. This is not just a clinic in taking body measurments and telling you what size components to use. The BG Fit Method takes into account your body's physiology, history (previous injuries and idiosyncrasies), and your body's natural range of motion to fit the bike to you (not you to the bike). Corwin has been fitting road bikes for 10 years and this certification only adds more knowledge and expertise to your fit experience. Do you have questions or concerns about your current ride? Wild weather Riding in the Springtime Mank - Comfortably!
Spring 2010 has not been one for the weak. Wild weather has been pushing through the valley with big time rain, wind, snow, and more snow, wind, and rain. Those who have stepped over their steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber steeds despite the weather have a secret. They know how to dress for the weather and they know some of the best riding is happening now. Here are a few of our favorite pieces of bike clothing that keep us riding no matter what the weather is dishing out... Ready for a ride? Your first stop should be here.

This downhill bike known for its huge 7" and 8" travel, solid components and ability to level big and burly terrain just got faster and more capable under the likes of Sam Hill and Brendan Fairclough of the Monster Energy Team. Kai Rogers, from Steamboat Springs, recently bought the Specialized Demo 8 I from Ski Haus and spent a week in Moab breaking it in, stretching the cables, cycling the shocks, and lovin' life on his new rig.

Cervelo Test Team Cervelo - New to Ski Haus Spring 2010
Ski Haus is excited to have Cervelo in our shop. In stock and ready for a test ride are the R3 and S2 models. We are especially excited about the R3 which quickly developed a heritage of being a tough and strong bike capable of holding up against the worst riding conditions. 2 wins and 2 second place finishes at Paris-Roubaix confirms this bike can hold up even to our local rough-n-tough-chip-n-seal, potholed, frost heaved, and scoria trashed shoulders. The S2 is light, aero, nimble, and complian.t It offers a fast and comfortable ride (especially on our roads here in NW Colorado). Come in for a test ride!

Commuting
Bike Commuters Rule. We hate to admit it but little 'ol Steamboat Springs has a rush half-hour. It is amazing that this urban concept exists in our mountain community but it does. Lots of folks living on the mountain side drive to town to work and lots of folks who live in town drive to the mountain to work... The result is about 30 minutes of mayhem and traffic around 8 am and again around 5 or 5:30 pm.

The good news is people can change. All it takes is that first bike ride to work and the thinking begins to turn. "That wasn't so bad. I believe I will do that again!" Yes!

Ski Haus supports all the bike commuters who have parked their cars and trucks, put a leg over their bike, and pedaled to work, the grocery store, to the local pub, or nice evening out with their sweetie. Pedaling, leaving the polluter at home, is very kind thing.

Here are some Commuting tips to get you started.
- Choose a bike route different from your drive. Your driving route may not be the most effecient bike route. Many times the bike path, a back road, even a few dirt roads or trails, can lead to a stellar ride helping you avoid busy streets and busy intersections.
- Leave a change of clothes at work the night before or pick up a quality messenger bag to carry your work clothes and some wet weather riding gear. For messenger bags we recommend Chrome. These are the best riding, most comfortable packs to ride with...
- If your workplace doesn't have a locker room or shower facilities, buy some Go Towels, Nathan Power Shower Wipes or even baby wipes to freshen up once are at work.
- Ride an efficient bicycle. Use any bike to commute, the old clunker in the shed, the bike you road in high school 20 years ago. It doesn't matter. If you are looking to make your commute easier, consider a cyclocross bike like the Specialized Tricross, or a designed commuter like the Electra Amsterdam. Both of these bikes feature 700c sized wheels that roll smoother and will get you to work with ease and comfort.
- If your commute is too long to ride your bike, drive halfway and bike the rest. Park your car at the city limits and ride in from there. Every time you ride your bike you are helping to reduce congestion, air pollution, reduce demand on petroleum products, keep money in your personal budget, and make you happier. RIDE ON EVERYONE RIDE ON!
