| UPDATE! Surley Moonlander Recently the morning air has had a little extra bite to it, serving as a reminder that the first snowfall is not too far off. However, this no longer has to signal the beginning of the end of biking season. With fat bikes like the Surly Pugsley, we now have the opportunity to extend the riding season right through the winter months. By utilizing wildly large, low-pressure tires the Pugsley and bikes like it have the ability to conquer the snowy landscape in ways normal bikes can only dream of. The floatation afforded by the monstrous 3.8 tires found on the Pugsley gives the rider access to otherwise unrideable terrain including sand, mud, wet rocks and roots, ice, and many kinds of snow. So, whats better at keeping you grinning and pedaling all winter than big fat tires? Umm, BIGGER, FATTER tires of course! With this in mind, Surly is expected to unveil the next evolution in fat bikes this week at Interbike in Las Vegas, NV. The all new Moonlander will accommodate ridiculously large 4.7 tires and will be available as a frameset or as a complete bike. If purchased complete, the Lander will be sporting a host of new components, including the 26x4.7 Big Fat Larry tires matched to a set of 100mm Clownshoe rims. The Moonlander also gets a new offset Mr. Whirly crankset. Havent tired a fat bike yet? Ski Haus has two Pugsleys available for demo, and I can think of at least two of our employees who are sure to be rollin the new Moonlander when it becomes available this fall. Bring on the snow! |

USA Pro Cycling Challenge This past Friday and Saturday the USA Pro Cylcing Challenge raced through Steamboat Springs. Friday we had a major sprint finish rip down Lincoln Avenue. | All of Steamboat Springs was psyched up for the race to come to town. There was a massive crowd downtown to cheer the sprint. There was a huge crowd at the start on Saturday and a fantastic turnout to cheer the riders as they suffered up Rabbit Ears Pass. Everyone was pretty surprised to see how the effort destroyed the peloton going up the pass and it took over an hour of racing for the peloton to regroup on the other side. Several riders commented on how hard this catagory 2 climb was underestimated by the riders. We're all hoping the race comes back to town next year. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Specialized Toupe Pro Saddle Your tires connect you to the road and and trail. Your bike shoes/cleats, grips or tape, and saddle connect you to your bike. Of the three connection spots I'd say the saddle is the most important. This is where the Specialized Toupe Saddle comes to play a huge role. This is a fantasic minimalist saddle. - Patented BG design is lab tested to assure blood flow to sensitive arteries. - Super-light EVA padding for comfort and performance on longer rides. - Stiff carbon-reinforced shell for longevity and all-day racing efficiency. - Ultra-light and strong oversized FACT carbon rails. - Tough, light and water resistant Micromatrix cover. |

Specialized Purgatory Control 2Bliss Mtb Tire There are as many mountain bike tire choices as there are trails and trail conditions. How do you choose? The easy way is to ask a trusted friend with a similar riding style. That is where we come in. One of the most popular tires we have in Ski Haus right now is the Specialized Purgatory. This tire seems to fit our season perfectly. We are going through dry and wet periods. The trails are running firm and then soft. The Purgatory handles both conditions equally well. Thr tread has great bite and steering control on the outside and softer compound through the center tread for when the track turns soft. Wet? Dry? It doesn't matter. Hit your favorite trail with confidence! |

2011 Tour de Steamboat Every summer you should have a highlight or a goal that you shoot for. While I'd like to ride more centuries, usually I'm able to ride one for the summer... The Tour de Steamboat is my ride and it is always great and it supports a great cause (The Sunshine Kids). The Tour rides over Rabbit Ears Pass, Gore Pass, and Yellowjacket Pass (a.k.a. Gore Pass Gruel) right here in Steamboat's backyard. I like this ride because it is supported with plenty of aid stations and the Colorado Highwyay Patrol is on the road helping motorists behave. Saftey in numbers is a good thing. This year over 700 rides took part in the 100+, 40, or 25 mile rides. Above: The roll out at 7:00 am. Left: Four riders share the pace and the pulls climbing Gore Pass's second summit. Ready to try a fun ride to support a great cause? The Tour de Steamboat could just be your ride, too! |

Specialized Tarmac Expert In honor of Levi Leipheimer's victory at the 2011 Tour de Suisse, we've chosen the Specialized Tarmac as our bike web page pick of the week. The Tarmac is a great ride. Everything about it is designed to be stiff and light and reactive under the rider. Yes, it is a stiff frame but not with the sacrafice of comfort or control. You'll find you can ride centuries on this bike as easily as you can the 1 hour lunch ride with friends. Performance can't be underrated or under appreciated. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| With the Tarmac underneath you - you will want to ride and ride and ride. The entire Tarmac family borrows technologies from the high-end, Pro Tour-winning SL3 and SL2. This not only increases performance and overall value in every Tarmac but it allows all riders to enjoy technology exclusively found on S-Works level bikes. Even the Pro and Expert level bikes use the same SL3 construction as the S-Works models, but feature a different carbon layup. The Comp and Elite bikes share technology like triangulated seatstays, even using the same molds as our SL2 frames. With other features like the tapered head/steer tube and the highest weight to stiffness ratio allow this bike to be fast and stable. Ready to take your riding to the next level? Ready to really lean into the downhill curves and accelerate out of the saddle like a champ? You're ready for the Tarmac! |

Garmin Edge 500 - NEW! Ski Haus has recently become the official dealer for Garmin GPS units in Steamboat Springs. We are really excited to ride with the Garmin Edge 500 bike computer. All the information you need as you ride will be right at your fingers tips and you won't need to wonder about accuracy. The Edge 500 is a lightweight GPS-based cycling computer loaded with data. The Edge 500 tracks your distance, speed, location and elevation with high sensitivity GPS. Add an ANT+ compatible heart rate monitor, speed/cadence sensor or compatible power meter for a finely-tuned analysis of your ride. During your ride, Edge 500 measures your speed, distance, time, calories burned, altitude, climb and descent, and records this data for your review. For extra-precise climb and descent data, Edge 500 also incorporates a barometric altimeter to pinpoint changes in elevation. All Edge 500 versions work with third-party ANT+-enabled power meters to display your power output in watts as you ride. This valuable data shows you how hard you're working, regardless of conditions affecting your ride, so you can train smarter. Some versions also ship with a digital heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor. The Courses feature helps you compare successive rides over the same route, as well as Auto Pause, Auto Lap and temperature readings. Edge also alerts you if youre moving, but the timer is not running. The Edge 500 tracks heart beats per minute and uses your heart rate for advanced calorie computation, so you know how many calories you're burning. Train in a certain heart-rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performance over the same ride. Once your rides done, connect Edge 500 to your computer with the included USB cable to analyze your performance. With a simple click, you can join a worldwide network of cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts through Garmin Connect, a one-stop site for data analysis and sharing. |

Bell Volt - Gear Review - Helmet tips It is weird to see bike riders out on the road or trail not wearing a helmet. LIfe is just too unpredicatable not put a helmet on your head even for a short ride "around the block." I've heard that most cycling crashes occur only 1 or 2 miles (or 1 or two blocks) away from home. This just goes to show how necessary helmets are for rider safety. Wear a helmet, forget about it, and don't worry about helmet hair. Personally, I wear the Bell Volt. I get a great fit from Bell. The simplest way to determine which brand is best for you is try a few different helmets. It becomes obvious right away which brand matches your head shape. Ski Haus stocks helmets from Specialized, Bell, and Giro. All three manufacturers offer different fits. From there, determine your price range. All helmets protect you at a minimum safety standard. Look for the CPSC sticker inside the helmet. Some helmets only meet these safety standards - other helmets will exceed them. The more expensive a helmet usually exceeds the standard with less material (more air vents, more comfort) but even the least expensive helmet will be better than none. Always ride with a good fitting helmet. |

Pearl Izumi Barrier Lite Cycling Shoe Cover No matter what your riding style the Pearl Izumi Barrier Lite Shoe Cover will keep your feet warm, dry, and aerodynamic. These are one of my favorite pieces of gear for riding in the Spring or Fall. I love how they keep my feet warm and dry even on the worst weather days. Pearl Izumi only calls these shoe covers weather resistance but I find they work great on the wettest and coldest days. For really cold days you may find you need more insulation around your toes but that all depends on how you run - hot or cold. The simple pull-on style means no zippers to ruin the aero and stealthy style. Perfect for designed bike shoes, road or mountain. Be careful pulling them over external buckles. They are not fragile but they are very snug. Don't know why I waited so long to get a pair and neither should you! |

| Bike Commuters Rule. We hate to admit it but little 'ol Steamboat Springs has a rush half-hour. It is amazing that this urban concept exists in our mountain community but it does. Lots of folks living on the mountain side drive to town to work and lots of folks who live in town drive to the mountain to work... The result is about 30 minutes of mayhem and traffic around 8 am and again around 5 or 5:30 pm. The good news is people can change. All it takes is that first bike ride to work and the thinking begins to turn. "That wasn't so bad. I believe I will do that again!" Yes! Ski Haus supports all the bike commuters who have parked their cars and trucks, put a leg over their bike, and pedaled to work, the grocery store, to the local pub, or nice evening out with their sweetie. Pedaling, leaving the polluter at home, is very kind thing. Here are some Commuting tips to get you started. - Choose a bike route different from your drive. Your driving route may not be the most effecient bike route. Many times the bike path, a back road, even a few dirt roads or trails, can lead to a stellar ride helping you avoid busy streets and busy intersections. - Leave a change of clothes at work the night before or pick up a quality messenger bag to carry your work clothes and some wet weather riding gear. For messenger bags we recommend Chrome. These are the best riding, most comfortable packs to ride with... - If your workplace doesn't have a locker room or shower facilities, buy some Go Towels, Nathan Power Shower Wipes or even baby wipes to freshen up once are at work. - Ride an efficient bicycle. Use any bike to commute, the old clunker in the shed, the bike you road in high school 20 years ago. It doesn't matter. If you are looking to make your commute easier, consider a cyclocross bike like the Specialized Tricross, or a designed commuter like the Electra Amsterdam. Both of these bikes feature 700c sized wheels that roll smoother and will get you to work with ease and comfort. - If your commute is too long to ride your bike, drive halfway and bike the rest. Park your car at the city limits and ride in from there. Every time you ride your bike you are helping to reduce congestion, air pollution, reduce demand on petroleum products, keep money in your personal budget, and make you happier. RIDE ON EVERYONE RIDE ON! Take the 2 mile challenge. Check out www.2milechallenge.com |
