To Wear or not To Wear?
Here are the answers to your ski and snowboard helmet questions.
Wear a helmet to ski or ride? What for? I don't compete, I don't ski fast or take chances. I'm just a cruiser.

Yeah, good point but what about that jack who bombs through crowds in a full tuck dreaming he is Herman Maier? After he/she takes you out unexpectedly you'll know why you need a helmet.

Will I stay warm enough?

Most people worry about being too warm. All the helmet companies are developing ways to keep you at a nice comfortable temperature.
Giro has integrated optional ventilation system. Two models from Giro have removable vent plugs and a third, the Fuse, has vents you can activate with a switch. The Fuse lets you vent the helmet either wide, wide open, or closed. The best part about these helmets is that for only a few more bucks you can rock a built in headphone kit.

So what kind of helmet designs are there?

You can get a helmet that is full cut with shell protection around your ears or a chop style helmet with soft padding around ears for protection.

How do you choose?

This really comes down to personal preference. I like lids with removeable soft ear protection. I can pop it in on the really cold days or take the drop liner off on the mild days.

You shouldn't shy away from hard ear protection or full cut helmets, though. These helmets offer the ultimate in protection in that they are not only protecting the top half of your head but with an optional jaw guard like racers wear they protect your face and jaw too. It all depends on what level of protection you are looking for.

What about kids?

Boeri has great helmets for kids with some flashy paint jobs. Let's not forget to set a good example for the kids, ok parents? I know a lot of you parents are too proud to wear a helmet but it shouldn't be that way....

Ski Haus has a ton of helmets to choose from and trying to decide can be overwhelming.

The best way to figure out what to buy is to concentrate on fit. Different models within a helmet manufacturer's line won't all fit the same. These guys know there are lots of different head shapes out there. Is your head shape oval, oblong, or maybe even square? Go for the helmet that fits the best and then pick your favorite color.
